my letting agency has informed me that my deposit was not put in protected scheme and last year the parent company of agency went into liquidation but the company started new company and took the old tenants with them but now they are saying they do not know were deposits are and may have contact liquidators to try and get it back is this correct

This doesn't sound right to me!

I'm sure that your deposit should be in a protection account. If another agent has taken over from the bankrupt agent then they should be responsible for registering the deposit again! Besides, even if it wasn't registered in a deposit protection account you would expect it would be kept in a client account.
